Our daily routine is set up like this:
Wake up, (snuggles) potty, freshen up (change, brush teeth, etc)
Do something active/outside of the home
[This is when we try to do anything that we need to leave the house for, such as gymnastics lessons, library time, grocery shopping, or just for a walk to the park.]
Home - lunch
Play with toys or go outside, read books
Make dinner (the kids like to help)
Play in the backyard or park or with toys
This structure allows my children to transition smoothly from one activity to the next (with a 5 minute warning to avoid meltdowns) because it helps them to think ahead to what they will be doing next. When they can anticipate what comes next, they learn self control because they know they have to leave or be patient and wait for an activity that they love. When they know what to expect, they can also fully engage in their activities and learn. This means they can PLAY better - they have more fun and learn more as they play!
Here are a couple other websites and articles that gave excellent examples of why routines are important, and practical examples of how we can put routines into our lives as well.
Please share some of your daily routines with us! :)
